I grew up in Govanhill (Batson Street) and Toryglen in the 1950's and 1960's. Swimming was my favourite sport. I spent many a happy time swimming in both pools.
Seeing this video brings back many memories; we would also come here with our school...Battlefield Secondary School. I used to attend the swimming galas there.
It would be a terrible loss to close the baths down. We would come here once a week for a bath!! The baths and swimming pools are too beneficial to the local community.
Thanks for sharing this...it brought back some childhood memories. Hazel MacKenzie mackenzie1281@roadrunner.com
Very good interview and its nice to see inside the baths. Can't wait till the Govanhill baths reopen, we all miss it very much.
When I was a teenager I lived in Langside Road and I used these swimming baths and it was so convenient for us. The facility gave me the chance to learn to swim and to integrate with society, the library used to be round the corner and that was a great place for us to study. Govanhill was a mess in the 80's and now it is even worse! I visited the place and it is now home to people who are at the bottom of the economic scale!! These baths are an essential part of the area and they need to be there for the community.
